The always Glorious Sousaphonics return to Jazzgroove on August 17 after years honing their set on the true front line of Australia's music scene: primary schools.

Marcello Maio

Marcello brings together a selection of Sydney's finest, including an awesome percussion section from Chile and Brazil. Expect some delectable original material from his soon to be released album, Samba Mundi, covering all that is Salsa, Samba and Jazz.

Carl Dewhurst

Showa 44 deliver a sonic tour de force, combining ambient sounds with ear-splitting electronics. With Barker's repetitive motifs (via the use of gongs) and Dewhurst's powerful guitar playing, the duo carves out an adventuresome route through the world of sound.

Well regarded as a distinctive and exciting guitarist, Aaron also continues to develop a strong compositional voice. His work reveals a deep appreciation of harmony and mood, while serving as an inspiring improvisational springboard for his band.

Following a seven year hiatus, Mark Lau finally visits from New York City, to play with three close friends and collaborators. The collective will draw from such diverse influences as alternate rock and ambient electronica.


21st July
10pm The Adrian Mears "Visiting" Quartet (Germany)

Adrian departed Australian shores 17 years ago, to investigate the jazz scene overseas. Based in Germany, he has become a major figure on the European and international jazz scene, performing with many distinguished top acts. On this short visit he teams up with old and new friends in an exciting quartet that will showcase originals and modified standards.

After six months of weekly hangs, plays and general work shopping of ideas, the Three Omegas are ready to reveal to audiences the fruits of their labour. The group strives to present a unique approach to the guitar trio format by exploring music with an uninhibited openness, embracing uneasiness and a shared intuitive trust.

Trio Apoplectic

Trio Apoplectic's journey has taken them to many of the regular homes of jazz and improvised music in Australia, as well as areas with little or no live exposure to the music. Now after much time on the road they return to Sydney for their last gig. Ever!

Their sound is a synthesis of ideas, influenced by elements of jazz, rock, classical, electronic and folk music, performed in a piano trio context. Their debut album 'Amalgama' (under former name Austin Benjamin Trio) was released on hellosQuare recordings in November 2008.
